ROC Nova College Weekend Tournament 2009ROC Nova College Weekend Tournament 2009
28.06.2009 GMs Igor Khenkin, Erik Van Den Doel and Alexander Berelovich have won the ROC Nova College Weekend Tournament 2009 which took place 26 - 28 June 2009 in Haarlem, Netherlands. The 2009 edition of the tournament attracted 151 participants (2008: 126, 2007: 160) including 5 GMs and 4 IMs. Khenkin, Van Den Doel and Berelovich all scored 5.0/6 in Group A (44 participants), but Khenkin won the cup thanks to a better TPR (performance rating). Group B (64 participants) was won by Jeroen Schuil and Robert Boes, and Group C (43) was won by Lukas Boots. After Khenkin and Van Den Doel produced a 8-mover final round draw to secure a piece of the prize money, an old discussion came back up. Should quick final round draws somehow be prevented to give the audience value for coming to the playing hall? Should top ranked players be forced to play for a win? It is ChessVista’s take that just going for a result is part of any competition. People who make a living by playing chess, have the right to have a focus on generating income. The tournament was organised by chess club HWP Haarlem. Photo impression round 4, 27 June 2009 by Frits Agterdenbos.

The inner circle knows it should be Käty van der Mije, which has the same pronunciation. The Romanian Chess Federation has published an interview (by Dinu-Ioan Nicula, in Romanian language) with Alexandra van der Mije-Nicolau and was willing to give ChessVista permission to publish a translation in English.

Valentine poem for CValentine poem for C
2008-02-14 ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’ is what we say today to our beloved ones. It is the day we want to reach the ones we love, sometimes the unreachable love. As chess is often without words, the chess player, even more than others, needs ways to tell his world is bigger than a board with pieces. The chess player wants to say you are the only chess piece that really counts, you are my flower on the board. We send a card, a flower. Maybe we will write a poem. This moment, it is you. I have been hunting you so much. Sometimes I see you, but I can not capture you. Your face, your look. This moment, it is you… Chess photographer Frits Agterdenbos has written a poem (Portrait of C, 14 February 2008). Inspired by his love for the people in the world of Chess. Inspired by his wish to get a true picture of the chess player.

Corus Chess 2008 Closing CeremonyCorus Chess 2008 Closing Ceremony
31.01.2008 The Closing Ceremony of the 70th Corus Chess Tournament took place Sunday 27 January in the Chess Pavillion in Wijk aan Zee. An important part of the Corus Chess closing ceremony is the Prize-Giving, but the most important part is the Pea Soup Dinner. It is said that a newcomer in the tournament who openly dislikes the soup will not be invited again. Prizes were awarded to the winners of the Grandmaster Groups: Aronian and Carlsen (A), Movsesian (B) and Caruana (C). In the meanwhile, the 65th Pea Soup Dinner (Dutch: Snertmaaltijd) took place. The tournament is full of traditions. Which include rules and restrictions to players and journalists. And there are privileges for a few happy ones. Maybe you ask, how did the pea soup taste this year? Well I don’t know. It was the first time since 1980 (in which year I had my first Wijk aan Zee photo on the cover of Schakend Nederland) that my request to join the dinner was refused. Okay I said, just let me take photos, that will be enough. That was allowed. But at arriving at the Chess Pavillion, crowded with chess companions sitting at tables, I was told to wait outside till the soup had been served. Later on I got access. And I did my job. A lot of chess journalists were excluded and stayed away from the scene. Wondering why. I saw one of them drinking in a bar, lonely as chess can make you. Disappointed and grieved. Next year the fight to be in will be tougher than ever. But not everybody will come again. To pea or not to pea, that is the question. Report by Frits Agterdenbos.

Harmen Jonkman - Globetrotter plays Home TournamentHarmen Jonkman - Globetrotter plays Home Tournament
02.02.2007 He has the looks of a proto-Dutchman and the heart of a cosmopolitan: the Dutch GM Harmen Jonkman (born in 1975). In Wijk aan Zee, not far from his residence Beverwijk, he participated in the Corus Chess 2007 Group C. He was the only player who could sleep at home, no need for a hotel. Harmen Jonkman was one of the totally 14 Dutch players in the A, B & C groups. His performance in Wijk aan Zee came shortly after a 4 months trip to Latin America where he stayed with his Peruvian girlfriend Lida meanwhile playing some tournaments in Peru, the Dominican Republic and Argentina. Harmen Jonkman has a great liking for exotic countries, and it was no surprise when he met Lida Carlota Ynza Benites in Moscow (Aeroflot 2005) that she made him fall in love. We provide you with a survey of Harmen’s Latin American tournaments and with some photos of Harmen in Wijk aan Zee.

Meanwhile in Khanty-MansiyskMeanwhile in Khanty-Mansiysk
23.12.2006 When the 2005 World Chess Cup was announced to be held in Khanty-Mansiysk (West Siberia, Russia), journalists complained it was far and away. Moreover, it was much too cold to go there. Of course the qualified players did go to West Siberia since the 128 player knock out tournament was a qualifier for the Candidate Matches and there was a lot of money at stake. The mass event turned out to be a very well organized tournament. And yes indeed the temperature was minus a lot, but the cold was not unbearable. Half a year later in May 2006, in Turin, the 2010 Chess Olympiad was entrusted to Khanty-Mansiysk. The Khanty-Mansiysk bid included a promise to organize two World Chess Cups (2007, 2009) as well. By now the events are scheduled in the agenda. Meanwhile for the second time Khanty-Mansiysk hosted the Cup of the Governor 20 to 26 November 2006.

03.06.2006 The FIDE President election took place on Friday 2 June at the General Assembly in the Torino Incontra Congress Centre in the centre of Turin, 4 kilometers from the Olympic playing hall. The General Assembly is part of The 77th FIDE Congress 27 May – 4 June. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was re-elected, scoring 96-54. Bessel Kok (together with Ali Nihat Yazici in The Right Move team) loss was an honourable defeat. He showed being a good loser. His attempt to take over the FIDE presidency was a very serious wake-up call for FIDE. After hearing the election result Bessel Kok seemed relieved. Together with Kirsan Ilyumzhinov the other (Chess Fidelity) team members will enter (again) the Presidential Board: Georgios Makropoulos, Lewis Ncube, Ignatius Leong, Nigel Freeman.

22.05.2006 Round 1 was played on Sunday 21 May at 03.00 p.m. in the Olympic Oval. In the Men’s section 146 teams are participating, while in the Women’s section there are 106 teams. Resulting from the usual pairings system the first round saw a lot of giants – dwarfs encounters, for the most part ending in a maximum win for the giants, meaning 4-0 in the men’s section and 3-0 in the women’s section. And it is no surprise, as in every Chess Olympiad, that in round 1 there are surprises. In the Men's section top seeded Russia (1st round with Grischuk, Morozevich, Bareev and Rublevsky) defeated Kazakhstan 4-0. Second seeded India lost to Morocco scoring only 1 point: 3-1. Ukraine dropped half a point because Ivanchuk was not able to beat IBCA world champion (blind people) Sergey Krylov. In the Women’s section top seeded Russia (1st round with Kosteniuk and the Kosintseva sisters) scored a 3-0 victory over Portugal, while second seeded Ukraine spoiled half a point.
