Chess Olympiad Final Round 13 & Awards Ceremony
05.06.2006 The final round 13 was played on Sunday 4 June 10.00 a.m. Armenia won gold in the men’s section and Ukraine won gold in the women’s section.
In the Men’s section Armenia (Aronian, Akopian, Asrian, Sargissian) made a quick 4 boards draw 2-2 versus Hungary to secure the gold medal with 36,0 points. China defeated Netherlands 2,5-1,5 to finish second on 34,0 points. USA overtook Israel to take third place (33,0 points) crushing Norway (only Kamsky – Carlsen was a draw) 3,5-0,5. Russia amazed losing to Israel 1-3.
In the Women’s section Ukraine (Lahno, Yanovska-Gaponenko, Ushenina) versus Armenia did the same trick as the Armenian men, drawing all games quickly, and finishing on 29,5 points. Russia defeated India 2-1, which was enough to be runner-up on 28,0 points. China defeated Belarus 2,5-0,5 to finish third on 27,5 points, three points ahead of number 4 USA.
