Dutch Championships Tiviakov and Peng champions

30.06.2006 Sergey Tiviakov is the new Dutch Champion with a fabulous score of 9/11. In the final round Thursday 29 June he defeated Erwin l’Ami, while only left competitor Ivan Sokolov lost to Friso Nijboer to finish second. Loek Van Wely had already been shaken off a round ago. The former champion (2000-2005) and Nijboer finished on third place. Jan Timman was in bad shape losing many Elo points.
In the women’s section Zhaoqin Peng again won the title. She made only one draw (against Tea Lanchava who finished third) and won all the other games. Bianca Muhren performed excellent, finishing second. She made a score of 7/9, enough to get the WGM title soon.

Tivi
Sergey Tiviakov: “I am very happy with winning 20 Elo points. Of course I am also happy with winning the champion’s title, but this championship as a tournament is not the most important one.” In his early chess career days Tiviakov became junior world champion. As a member of the Russian team he won the Chess Olympiad. As a member of the Dutch team he won the European Team Championship in 2001 and 2005.
