02.07.2006 The HSG Open was one of the many side events being organized during the Dutch Championships in Hilversum (the Netherlands). The event took place 19-29 June 2006 in television Studio 22, the same venue as the one where also the championships were being held. The Open was won by Dutch GM Karel Van Der Weide, who has chosen Karel The Great as a nickname, appropriate for his height and presumably for many other aspects of his personality. Karel Van Der Weide won all his 9 games, a performance rating of 2906. ‘A Kasparov performance’, he whispered from above.
