Dutch Open round 6 drama Tiviakov vs Nijboer

01.08.2006 The Dutch Open Championship 2006 Round 6 (31 July) encounter between Sergey Tiviakov playing white against Friso Nijboer was in fact Part 2 of a Championship Drama of which Part 1 took place 37 days ago when the same players clashed in Round 7 (24 June) of the Dutch Championship. Photographer Frits Agterdenbos was on the spot again because he felt there was fire to be expected.

PART 1 (Hilversum, Netherlands)
Tiviakov versus Nijboer. Part 1 took place on 24 June 2006 in Hilversum. Event: Dutch Championship, round 7. With two more seconds left on the clock Friso Nijboer claims a draw. The claim is rejected by the arbiters. Tiviakov wins the game. Friso Nijboer is angry and leaves the stage.

PART 2 (Dieren, Netherlands)
Nijboer versus Tiviakov. Part 2 took place on 31 July 2006 in Dieren. Event: Dutch Open Championship, round 6. Sergey Tiviakov loses dramatically in won position when –in unnoticed check- he makes an illegal queen move and is forced to play a legal queen move at the cost of her majesty.

Sergey Tiviakov thinks that was all and wants to play 98. Kd8, but then Friso Nijboer claims Sergey Tiviakov should play his queen, saying “You have touched the queen, so you should make a queen move”.
