Friso Nijboer wins Dutch Open Championship
04.08.2006 Friso Nijboer (NED) gained a well-deserved tournament victory (7.5 points) starting with 6 out 6 including a bizar win against Tiviakov (round 6), and finishing with 3 draws against Mchedlishvili (7), Greenfeld (8) and Ernst (9). The Dutch GM is on his way to a solid position in the FIDE Top 100, next October. Alon Greenfeld (ISR) finished second on 7 points. Mikheil Mchedlishvili (GEO), Sipke Ernst (NED), Willy Hendriks (NED) and Erik Van Den Doel (NED) shared the third place on 6.5 points. Elo favourite Sergey Tiviakov who came to Dieren to break the 2700 barrier spoiled a lot of Elo points scoring 5.5 points only. In the final round he lost to Erik Van Den Doel.
The Dutch Open 2006 was also a qualifying tournament for the Dutch (closed!) Championship 2007. Dutchmen Willy Hendriks, Sipke Ernst and Erik Van Den Doel (all scoring 6.5 points) will have to play off to decide who gets the ticket. Friso Nijboer already got his ticket because he finished third/fourth in the Dutch Championship 2006.
Désiree Hamelink, 5 points, was the best Dutch lady, qualifying for the Dutch Women Championship 2007.
