ChessVista.com is the website of chess photographer Frits Agterdenbos. The site provides the international chess community with high quality chess photos and chess news of chess players from international chess events. There will be visual reports and an album with chess photo collections showing all the visual aspects of the chess world.
01.12.2006 The 11th Cultural Village Chess Tournament saw a field of experienced masters and IM norm hunters.
Experienced masters: Romeo Sorin Milu (ROM, 2430, IM), David Smerdon (AUS, 2473, IM), Julius Armas (FRA, 2392, IM) and Yochanan Afek (ISR, 2372, IM).
IM Norm hunters: Jan Willem De Jong (NED, 2435, FM), Bianca Muhren (NED, 2336, WIM), Robin Swinkels (NED, 2379), Michiel Abeln (NED, 2380, FM) and Dennis Ruijgrok (NED, 2278). Though the tournament was won by the young master Thomas Willemze (NED, 2384, IM). In this report we provide you with portraits of all the players, by photographer Frits Agterdenbos.
Thomas WILLEMZE, Dutch IM, clear winner with 7.0/9, qualified for Corus-C 2007 next January, won a lot of Elo points thanks to a 2606 performance. (photo 2006-11-26)
Jan Willem DE JONG, Dutch FM, achieved his second IM norm by scoring 5.5 points. Many short games / draws (62 + 14 + 20 + 37 + 32 + 14 + 14 + 11 + 10 = 214 moves). He played a clever tournament. (photo 2006-11-29)
Romeo Sorin MILU, IM, tied for second with 5.5 points. Is number 31 of Romania. Played the Chess Olympiad 1992. (photo 2006-11-29)
David SMERDON is an Australian IM who lives currently in The Netherlands, where he is attending lectures at the University of Amsterdam. Played the Turin Chess Olympiad in 2006. Has already achieved one GM norm. (photo 2006-11-26)
Bianca MUHREN, the only female player, is a Dutch WIM, but will be awarded the WGM title soon. She gathered her 4.5 points in an unusual way, drawing all 5 games as white, while winning 2 games and losing 2 games as black. (photo 2006-11-26)
Robin SWINKELS is a coming young man (born 1989) from The Netherlands, who won a lot of Elo points this year. He has two IM-norms, but in Wijk aan Zee he scored 4.5 points, 1 point less than the needed 5.5 points to achieve an IM norm. (photo 2006-11-26)
Michiel ABELN, Dutch FM, made his first IM norm a few months ago in the BDO tournament in Haarlem. He makes a living as a Financial Controller. (photo 2006-11-26)
Julius ARMAS, French IM, a regular in Wijk aan Zee. Born in 1955, he is the second oldest in the tournament. (photo 2006-11-29)
Dennis RUIJGROK, Dutch Junior Champion 2004. No IM norm yet. Finished on 3.0/9. Took the role as local hero being a member of the local chess club De Wijker Toren. (photo 2006-11-26)
Yochanan AFEK, IM, born in 1952 in Israel, but living in the Netherlands, is a versatile chess player. Known for being trainer, arbiter, study composer. In 2002 -at 50- he won the Paris Open earning a GM norm with a 2660 performance. (photo 2006-11-29)
