02.02.2007 He has the looks of a proto-Dutchman and the heart of a cosmopolitan: the Dutch GM Harmen Jonkman (born in 1975). In Wijk aan Zee, not far from his residence Beverwijk, he participated in the Corus Chess 2007 Group C. He was the only player who could sleep at home, no need for a hotel. Harmen Jonkman was one of the totally 14 Dutch players in the A, B & C groups. His performance in Wijk aan Zee came shortly after a 4 months trip to Latin America where he stayed with his Peruvian girlfriend Lida meanwhile playing some tournaments in Peru, the Dominican Republic and Argentina. Harmen Jonkman has a great liking for exotic countries, and it was no surprise when he met Lida Carlota Ynza Benites in Moscow (Aeroflot 2005) that she made him fall in love. We provide you with a survey of Harmen’s Latin American tournaments and with some photos of Harmen in Wijk aan Zee.
