Corus Chess 2008 Round 6
18.01.2008 Round 6 was played on Friday 18 January, the day after Bobby Fischer died at the chess age of 64. A one-minute silence tribute honouring the chess genius was held at the start of the round. One hour later, at the opening ceremony of the Honorary Group in the chess pavilion, the one-minute silence tribute was done again. It was a little bit like ‘The king is dead. Long live the king!’ seeing Carlsen taking sole lead in Group A. He defeated Judit Polgar. Kramnik (vs Aronian) and Topalov (versus Leko) also won their games. In Group B Bacrot leads with 4.5 points after making a draw versus Nepomniachtchi. He is followed by Stellwagen, Movsesian and Smeets with 4.0 points. In Group C Braun is leading with 5.0 points, followed by Nijboer, Reinderman and Caruana who lost to Krush. The Honorary Group starts Saturday. First round pairings are Ljubojevic – Timman and Kortchnoi – Portisch.
