21.01.2008 Round 8 game Nigel Short versus Ivan Cheparinov (Group B) was replayed Tuesday 21 January (in fact Rest Day 2) after a decision made by the Appeals Committee (Kramnik, Krasenkow and Polgar). The game was won by Short. The Appeals Committee (AC) had decided that the game had to be replayed. The AC also decided that Cheparinov had to make public excuses to Short for his refusal to shake hands. Moreover, the AC decided that both players had to shake hands at the start of the game. In a statement Cheparinov made apologies to Short, but also to the Tournament Committee and to Corus as sponsor of the tournament. Cheparinov arrived in the playing hall before the scheduled time 13.30 hours. But rumours made believe Short was not going to show up. Chief arbiter Thomas van Beekum started the clock at 13.30 hours. Short did arrive some minutes later, and after the handshake, he made his first move 1.e4 at 13.40 hours. The game took 72 moves. Big photo report showing the start of the game, full of tension - by Frits Agterdenbos.
