Dutch Champions: Jan Smeets and Zhaoqin Peng

15.04.2008 Jan Smeets is the new Dutch Chess Champion. After the penultimate round four players had chances to win the title: Daniël Stellwagen (7.0), Sipke Ernst (6.5), Erwin L’Ami (6.5) and Jan Smeets (6.5). In the final round Sunday 13 April Jan Smeets defeated Daniël Stellwagen, while Sipke Ernst and Erwin L’Ami lost to Ruud Janssen and Manuel Bosboom, respectively. Daniël Stellwagen and Dimitri Reinderman shared the second place. Sipke Ernst and Erwin L’Ami shared the fourth place. The 2006 & 2007 champion Sergei Tiviakov played an unlucky tournament and finished on a shared sixth place together with Friso Nijboer. In the women’s championship Zhaoqin Peng won her tenth title. She scored 8.0/9, making only two draws. Petra Schuurman finished second and Tea Lanchava finished third. Photos by Frits Agterdenbos.
