Friso Nijboer wins Utrecht Open Championship 2008

08.06.2008 The Utrecht Open Championship 2008 (in Dutch: Open Kampioenschap Utrecht 2008, or OKU 2008) took place on 6 – 8 June 2008 in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The tournament attracted 143 particpants. Group 1 (elo>1800, 77 participants including 5 GMs and 2 IMs) was won by GM Friso Nijboer with 5.5/6 points. GM Vyacheslav Ikonnikov and Lars Ootes finished second with 5.0 points, followed by GM Leonid Kritz, IM Roeland Pruijssers and FM Stefan Kuipers with 4.5 points. Group 2 (elo 1500-1900, 44 participants) was won by Rufail Mekuria. Group 3 (elo<1600, 22 participants) was won by Ernest de Vroome. The Utrecht Open Championship is a weekend tournament, 48 hours from Friday night till Sunday afternoon, 6 rounds Swiss, rate of play all moves in 115 minutes + 5 seconds added time per move. The event was was organized by Chess Club Paul Keres and sponsored by Adviesbureau Schrijvers and Wout van Veen Advocaten and others. Round 6 photo report by Frits Agterdenbos.
