Chess Olympiad Round 6

28.05.2006 Round 6 was played on Saturday 27 May at 03.00 p.m. In the Men’s section Netherlands defeated Russia 2,5-1,5. Friso Nijboer (black pieces!) who turned 41 the day before got a late birthday present, it was Sergey Rublevsky’s scalp. The other games ended in a draw: Sokolov (white) vs Kramnik, Tiviakov (black) vs Svidler and Van Wely (white) vs Grischuk.
It was the second time in a row that Netherlands made a victory over Russia. Fresh in memory is the day 4 August 2005 when Netherlands smashed Russia with 3-1 during the European Team Championship in Gothenburg and later took the gold medal. In Gothenburg the Dutch matchwinners were Tiviakov (win against Dreev) and Timman (win against Motylev). By the way in Turin Motylev is Russian team captain.

Armenia is now first ranked with 18 points, followed by Netherlands on 17,5. Russia and Belarus are on 17. India, Ukraine, USA and Sweden have 16,5 points.

In the Women’s section Russia leads with 14,5, followed by Ukraine 14, Slovakia 13,5. Romena, USA, India and Bulgaria are on 13.
