ROC Nova College Weekend Tournament 2009
28.06.2009 GMs Igor Khenkin, Erik Van Den Doel and Alexander Berelovich have won the ROC Nova College Weekend Tournament 2009 which took place 26 - 28 June 2009 in Haarlem, Netherlands. The 2009 edition of the tournament attracted 151 participants (2008: 126, 2007: 160) including 5 GMs and 4 IMs. Khenkin, Van Den Doel and Berelovich all scored 5.0/6 in Group A (44 participants), but Khenkin won the cup thanks to a better TPR (performance rating). Group B (64 participants) was won by Jeroen Schuil and Robert Boes, and Group C (43) was won by Lukas Boots. After Khenkin and Van Den Doel produced a 8-mover final round draw to secure a piece of the prize money, an old discussion came back up. Should quick final round draws somehow be prevented to give the audience value for coming to the playing hall? Should top ranked players be forced to play for a win? It is ChessVista’s take that just going for a result is part of any competition. People who make a living by playing chess, have the right to have a focus on generating income. The tournament was organised by chess club HWP Haarlem. Photo impression round 4, 27 June 2009 by Frits Agterdenbos.
