Chess Olympiad Round 7
29.05.2006 Round 7 was played on Sunday 28 May at 03.00 p.m. In the Men’s section Armenia made a clear victory over Netherlands 3-1. Aronian crushed Sokolov in a 19 mover, a game Sokolov would like to forget. Sargissian defeated L’Ami. The other games (Akopian vs Tiviakov and Asrian vs Van Wely) ended in a draw. Other top encounters: Russia – Belarus 3-1, India – Ukraine 1,5-2,5, USA – Sweden 2-2.
Armenia is now first ranked with 21 points, followed by Russia with 20,0 points. Third is Cuba with 19,5 points. Four countries are on 19,0 points: Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Georgia and Czech Republic.
In the Women’s section Russia leads with 17,5 followed by Ukraine 16,5 and USA 15,5.
The day started earlier with committee / commission meetings. May 28th was also the Day of Kalmykia, which was organised in the Olympic Oval as part of Kirsan Ilyumzhinov's presidential campaign. There was an entertaining programme with Kalmyk folk singing and folk dancing.
