Chess Olympiad Round 8

30.05.2006 Round 8 was played on Monday 29 May at 03.00 p.m. In the Men’s section Armenia improved its leading position in the table beating Cuba 3-1, Akopian and Sargissian won their games. Czech Republic drew Russia (Navara defeated Svidler). Armenia leads with 24 points. Russia and Ukraine are second on 22 points. China, Georgia, USA and France have 21,5 points.

In the Women’s section Russia leads with 19,0 points. Ukraine is second with 18,5 points. USA and China are on 17 points.

The playing hall is increasingly becoming the domain of the election campaigns of Kirsan Ilyumzhinov (Chess FIDE Fidelity) and Bessel Kok (The Right Move). More and more one sees chess players showing support by wearing caps and shirts with electoral slogans. Today Kamsky and Nakamura expressed their preference for Bessel Kok and Ali Nihat Yazici. Do we have a battle of the real kind? Although it is commonly thought that compared to what it once has been, this election battle is more a boy scout’s fight. We should be happy about that.
